Andare, Partire, Tornare

I'm so sorry I doubted you, Yes!

Boy, do I owe Yes an apology. Sorry, Yes! So very sorry for doubting you. The concert last night was fantastic. It was all the original members of the band, which means that they're all definitely up there age-wise, but instead of losing a step as they've gotten older, they've all gained a few. Total pros, and the guitar player is one of the best I've ever seen. The opening act was a band called Porcupine Tree, which I had actually heard of since I'm a fan of prog groups like King's X and Spock's Beard. Porcupine Tree is composed of Brits, so we got good music and a fun accent on the lead singer as well.

The concert was not just great for the music - Bemo and I diverted ourselves watching the crowd as well, which was composed of young hippies, aging hippies, and downright old hippies, plus an interesting mix of younger kids (some with parents, some on their own), people who were hippies but who went corporate and showed up for the show in jackets and ties, the occasional biker gang looking types, and the one kid with the Sepultura shirt. There was much dancing and singing along and rapturous gazes, and I can totally believe that this is a band that people have named children after (like that guy from the Road Rules show they did on the ship a few years back). The lead singer is a little elfin man who didn't bother to dress in anything resembling concert gear (like the spangly jacket on the keyboard player, which I wanted so much!). Instead, he was in a t-shirt and what looked like a jogging suit. Very your-grandpa-going-out-to-the-corner-store. He danced around, a little goofily, but unselfconsciously, and it was nice to see that he actually believes quite deeply in Yes' sort of pan-spiritualistic woo-woo peace, love, happiness stuff. It all could have come across as cheesy except for two things - everybody in the band is a consumate musician, and everybody in the band was really throwing themselves into their music so the crowd is brought along with them.

So anyway, I better get off to the non-woo-woo task of paying off some bills. Blah. And later today - pinning muslin backs to some quilts! And filing slides! And ordering a Rubbermaid cart! Gracious! I hope this sort of excitement doesn't keep up, because my heart can't hold out much longer! Can I get a witness!
