Ecclectia

Well, today was just lovely. Instead of doing my Proper Job and continuing to catalogue the beeelllions and beeeellllions of snuff box photographs, I went with our curator of costume to a nearby historic house (in Maryland) called Riversdale House. She was there to present on "The Real and the Ideal" which compared fashion plates with actual dresses, and the like, and I was there to serve as an extra pair of hands for the costumes, and also just to play hooky for a day.

The house is fabulous, with little stairs everywhere, a mock-up of a milliner shop, and the rooms with minimal furniture but some nice mannequins with some great costumes from the time period (early 1800's). So I got to learn a bunch of neat stuff, see a neat place, and, last but not least, get a free lunch and some fun conversation. It rained steadily all day - the sort of rain that really soaks into the ground - and it just looked lovely from inside the house, looking out through the older glass windowpanes that give everything sort of soft-focus blur or wobble. For some reason, it's easier to imagine myself back in time when it's raining.

Slugged home with a man in a smart suit driving a grubby little car, who spent most of his time driving home while talking to a senator, and the other half of it talking to his ex-wife about their daughter who is having trouble in school and who has a clueless teacher. It's amazing, sometimes, what you learn from a person just by sitting in the same car with them. Of course, most of the time everybody stays mum until you get out of the car, but these exceptions add a little interest to everything. And the fact that he was one of those cell-phone dependants made eavesdropping unavoidable!

Just burned a cd, and I thought I'd share the playlist.

Promised Boop I'd come over and pick up a box of old papers, so I better get to it.
