Andare, Partire, Tornare

I'm complicated!

Went to TGI Fridays in celebration of Bemo's birthday, and ate like princes. Yummy, yummy stuff, including decadent desserts (Bemo had to endure some singing to get his dessert, but it was a small price to pay). Then we headed over to mom's house to see the new water garden / pond that was just put in. It looks lovely, really. It's sort of a "natural" assemblage of slate with a shallow upper basin and water falling down into a larger lower basin.

After that, the two of us and Boop went to one of the GiantJumbotron multiplexes and saw League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Woof. If it hadn't been for Peta Wilson as Mina Harker, and Stuart Townsend as Dorian Grey, the movie would have been absolutely worthless - as it was, it was definitely not worth the almost nine bucks we paid to see it. It could have been pretty impressive, but given the suck-ass dialogue, the special effects which subtracted rather than added (sorry, but anybody who can see a submarine the size of Kansas silently creeping through the canals of Venice needs to get their head examined) and an unfortunate MTV quick-cut style of direction. There were some moments in the film when it came together, but unfortunately it all fell back apart almost immediatetly. Most of the actors were doing just fine, but they were given poopalicious things to say, and the plot was utter swiss cheese. If you're going to pull off an evil dictator who wants to take over the world, you've got to do it a little better than this if you don't want your audience to roll their eyes in disgust.

A few highlights (because there weren't all that many) -

Dorian Grey, having just been shot full of bullets to no apparent effect, stalks towards his assailant.

Assailant: "Wha...wha...how did you *do* that?"

Dorian (in full contemptuous dandy mode): "I'm complicated!"

Nemo's First Mate, upon introducing himself: "Call me Ishmael." (Note - myself and my sister and husband were the only three in the audience who laughed at this.)

There was a lot of hilarity involved in the movie, really - but most of it was my sister and I snarking at things like the deck chairs on the Nautilus and Nemo's pimpmobile.

I'll probably end up picking up the graphic novels that the movie was loosely based on. I know
