The Language of Flowers

From a Kate Greenway "Language of Flowers" book:

Garden Daisy - I partake your sentiments

Dark Geranium - Melancholy

French Marigold - Jealousy

Meadow Saffron - My best days are past

Mouse-eared Scorpion Grass - Forget me not

Mouse-Eared chickweed - ingeneous simplicity

Syrian Mallow - Consumed by love

Marjoram - Blushes

Wild Tansy - I declare war against you

Hydrangia - a boaster

Ranunuculus - you are rich in attractions

Dead leaves - sadness

prickly pear - satire

Oats - The Witching Soul of Music

Deep Red Carnation - Alas! for my poor heart

Red Columbine - Anxious, and heart trembling

Maybe we could push for the language of flowers to come back into vogue. Instead of going through Congress, our President could send a bouquet of Wild Tansy to declare war on somebody. The war, naturally, must be conducted mano a mano in a parlour in London, and both participations must have a fan, a nosegay, delicate dancing slippers, and a cup of punch to manage. The Winner is the person who garners the most marriage proposals.
